19th century French Napoleon III period prie dieu or prayer chair handcrafted and carved of solid walnut in Lyon, circa 1880s. This beautiful kneeling chair has its original covered, sloped top to rest one's arms or a prayer book with a hand carved ecclesiastical back splat and magnificent original needlepoint upholstery with a cross and flowers. Raised on short turned legs. Primarily used in private chapels, prie dieus provided a place for an individual to kneel at prayer. The seat, which was not intended for sitting but kneeling, makes a great seat for tiny tots. It's perfect for them to sit in at the coffee table while playing board games, doing puzzles or coloring. They slide in and out from under the table with ease. Structurally sound.
