Over the past 40 years, rhino populations have dropped over 95%. Of the five species of rhino on the planet, three of them are critically endangered: the black rhino, the Sumatran Rhino, and the Javan Rhino. Rhinos play an important role in their countries; they bring in large amounts of income from tourism and are vital to the ecosystem. In fact, their dung supports fly, beetle and fungus species, keeping the African plains healthy!
The main factor causing the decline of the rhino population is poaching. Rhinos are poached for their horns because they are believed to have medicinal properties in some countries. The poaching has increased due to the immense reward poachers can obtain for the horns, especially since many of these poachers are impoverished. Instability and war in the regions where the black rhino reside makes conservation efforts difficult.
You can help us protect rhinos. With your support, Greater Good Charities can work to halt deforestation, protect critical habitat, and put an end to poaching.
