Herky the Hawk has been the U of I's mascot since '48! The next-gen of Iowa fans have found their cuddle partner. "The Hawkeye got a face when cartoon character Herky made his debut in '48. He was created by Richard Spencer III, a journalism instructor. Herky was instantly popular and his name was chosen through a contest run by the UI Athletic Department. Belle Plaine native John Franklin suggested 'Herky'. For the last 60 years, Herky has represented UI athletic events and repped university life. During the Korean War, the 124th Fighting Squadron made Herky their insignia. Mid-50s, Herky came to football games in a black leather head and gold felt feathers. Ever since, Herky's been a regular at U of I competitions!
