A large 19th century French Louis Philippe period giltwood mirror having its original mercury glass, circa 1840s. The tall rectangular shape of the frame has straight corners at the base, while the upper shoulders have the typical rounded corners seen on Louis Philippe style frames. The inner border features "les perles" (beading that resembles a strand of pearls) next to the antique mirror glass. Artisans used this beading technique as a decorative element on the grandest pieces, as pearls symbolized power and luxury since only the most wealthy aristocrats could afford them. Red oxidation showing through the beautiful water gilded patina is original to the piece. The unique appearance of antique mirror glass always adds charm and character that is impossible to achieve with new mirror glass. Louis Philippe mirrors are ideal for use in both modern and traditional interiors.
