Rich with character and beautifully preserved, this exceptional 17th century French coffer or trunk from Normandy is a striking example of provincial Renaissance craftsmanship. Handcrafted in solid walnut and retaining its original hand forged iron hardware, it embodies the strength, artistry, and regional identity for which Norman woodworking has long been admired.

The façade is richly hand carved with deeply sculpted geometric panels — a signature motif of the Norman Renaissance. The decoration features faceted rosettes, compass-carved star lozenges, and overlapping circular forms, each shaped by hand to create a rhythmic, light catching surface. These motifs reflect the rural interpretation of Renaissance ornament common in 17th century Normandy: bold, architectural, richly textured, and grounded in the simplicity of provincial life.

Resting on a shaped plinth base, the coffer has a substantial presence and beautifully balanced silhouette. Its thick, single-plank walnut lid lifts to reveal a generous interior with a traditional till compartment, originally used for candles, documents, or treasured small items. The interior retains a naturally dry, untouched surface consistent with centuries of age.

Original 17th century hand forged ironwork completes the piece, including:
• A hammered iron lock plate with scalloped edges
• A hand-wrought hasp with early movement
• Robust forged hinges set into the rear of the lid

Each iron element was shaped by a village blacksmith at the time the coffer was made, adding authenticity and integrity rarely found today.

Coffers were the primary household furniture in early French homes, often found in nearly every room. Their durability and multifunctional design made them indispensable — serving as storage, seating, work surfaces, and even raised sleeping platforms for children. Norman examples in particular were prized for their bold carving and robust construction, serving rural families for generations and safeguarding linens, textiles, clothing, and valuables. Often passed down within the same family, few trunks survive today with such intact carving, original hardware, and a patina this rich and handsome.

A remarkable example of 17th century French provincial craftsmanship, this versatile Norman Renaissance coffer brings warmth, history, and sculptural beauty to any entryway, living room, or bedroom. Add a cushion to use it as extra seating in a hallway, mudroom, or kitchen, or place it in front of a sofa as a character-rich coffee table with hidden storage for blankets, games, and household necessities.
