Lionel Meunier, Vox Luminis
Description:
Vox Luminis is a small group of elite vocalists who have earned an outstanding reputation for their interpretations of 17th century works from German-speaking countries. Led by Lionel Meunier, an outstanding bass singer, their theme this time is Brahms' "German Requiem. However, they are not singing Brahms, but rather a collection of religious works from the German Baroque, with a focus on works based on the same texts that Brahms selected from Luther's translation of the German Bible. Schütz and other composers have used similar texts, but they have dared to collect unknown works, which is typical of them. The ensemble, with its low center of gravity and sturdy playing, is the very essence of the group, and they give a wonderful performance that brings out the charm of these works to the fullest extent. It is known that Brahms, who was a keen student of Baroque works, was inspired by many of them, and it is no exaggeration to say that the spirit of the works recorded here was passed on to Brahms.
