Whiplash and Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries is part three of our three-part lecture series, Mastering Motor Vehicles Cases II, and contains over six hours from an advanced Trial Guides seminar dedicated to motor vehicle cases. The content is presented by Dr. Arthur Croft: epidemiologist crash reconstructionist, and one of the world's leading authorities on traumatic injuries.

Whiplash, or cervical acceleration-deceleration (CAD) injury, occurs when a person’s head and cervical spine suddenly accelerate, experiencing a “whipping” motion in the process of deceleration. More than 3 million whiplash cases occur every year; and more than 50 percent of those cases lead to chronic issues, with 12 percent of cases resulting in lifelong disability.

Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) often go hand-in-hand with whiplash trauma. Like whiplash, mTBIs are more common than many people realize and can be easily downplayed by opposing counsel. Understanding the nuances of these debilitating conditions—and identifying common flaws in defense expert testimony—are critical skills for any personal injury lawyer.

In this three-hour, two-part video, Dr. Croft explores this important topic, offering crash-test video with real-world case studies, biomechanical assessments, and actuarial data. This program will cover:

  • The whiplash grading system and mTBIs in motor vehicle cases
  • Crash test videos and whiplash accident reconstruction
  • Why property damage and occupant injury are poorly correlated
  • Why the acceleration of the car is less important than the acceleration of the occupant
  • The role of “overspeed” in crash test analysis
  • Common misconceptions about whiplash injury (such as low velocity means low injury risk)
  • Variable acceleration rates between car, lumbar spine, thoracic spine, and head (and why this matters)
  • The epidemiology of whiplash injury
  • Forensic risk analysis of CAD injury based on human factors
  • What to look for with the delayed onset of whiplash symptoms
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and double crush syndrome occurring alongside whiplash injury
  • Early indicators of dementia risk, including Alzheimers, following a TBI
  • The use of video fluoroscopy in analysis
  • Concussion and mTBI
  • Alzheimer’s caused by mTBIs
  • Standard TBI definitions
  • Clarification on dementia risk after a TBI

Whiplash and Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries offers personal injury lawyers a roadmap for faster settlements, higher verdicts, and excoriating cross-examinations. Armed with cutting-edge information on whiplash and traumatic brain injuries, personal injury attorneys will be able to approach their next whiplash or mTBI case with clarity and confidence.

About the speaker: Dr. Arthur Croft PhD, DC, MSc, MPH, FACO, is a doctor, epidemiologist, and crash reconstructionist. He is considered to be one of the world's leading authorities on traumatic injuries. Dr. Croft coauthored the first textbook on whiplash and has authored or coauthored more than 350 professional papers on whiplash and other medical topics. He is a certified traffic accident reconstructionist and a former medical officer and underwater search and recovery diver for the San Diego Sheriff’s office. Dr. Croft lectures extensively across the United States and abroad, and he teaches an award-winning, four-module program on the traumatic injuries caused by auto accidents. He is the also director of the Spine Research Institute of San Diego.
